Selena Gomez’s Song ‘Call Me When You Break Up’ Isn’t About Who You Think It Is

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco just shared another look at their upcoming joint album—with a feature from Gracie Abrams. The trio dropped an upbeat new single titled “Call Me When You Break Up,” and though it might sound like a message directed to an ex, Gomez recently clarified the real subject of the song.

“To get an obvious statement out of the way, this song is actually about a best friend that I have in my life so it’s not about anything that you think it is,” she said during a listening event for the song in London. So you can put the theories to rest and just enjoy the bop.

Gomez has been sharing snippets of the song over the past few days on TikTok. In one she shot from bed, she’s seen lip syncing to the opening lyrics, “Call me when you break up / I want to be the first one on your mind when you wake up.”

It’s more energetic and pop-leaning than the acoustic, romantic ballad Gomez and Blanco released last week, “Scared of Loving You,” when they first announced news of their joint record. The album, I Said I Love You First, comes out on March 21. The couple spoke to Interview about recording the project together, and Gomez specifically shared what’s so great about working with Blanco.

“The fact that he listened to me,” she said. “Sometimes it’s difficult for me to speak up. Most of my anxiety right now is wanting him to speak because I feel like he’s more talented than I am in this field. It’s like working with a great filmmaker. Whether we were together or not, I think he still would’ve listened to everything that I had to say, and he was able to almost transcribe it into music, into what the feeling of what I was talking about should be. And I really found that to be helpful because this album definitely feels just as much mine as I’m sure it does his.”

At the tone, please record your message

Call me when you break up
I wanna be the first one on your mind when you wake up
I miss the way we’d stay up
We talk about forever when I’m takin’ off my makeup
Call me when you break up
And meet before I turn up like I like the space we take up
And I can forget what their name was
And when you’re feeling down, I can show you what you’re made of

Call mе when you break up
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
Call me whеn you break up
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh

I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it
I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it
I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it (Oh-oh)
I’ll make it worth it
Call me when you break up

I’m battling the lack of us, I look for medication
Tried every obvious replacement
In bars and strangers’ beds until my faith was in the basement
Won’t you call me when you break up?
I feel so out of luck
I’m skipping cracks along the pavement
Like I’m emotionally bankrupt
We’re so meant for each other, I mean, God, when will you wake up, wake up?

Call me when you break up
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh
Call me when you break up
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh

I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it
I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it
I’ll make it worth it, I’ll make it worth it (Oh-oh)
I’ll make it worth it
Oh, you picked up, um
Call me when you break up

Unless you found the person that you want a new name from
I’d like to be there when that day comes
You know I’m always here, so don’t ever be a stranger
