One of the twistiest, juiciest movies of this past year takes place in an unlikely setting: a papal conclave. In Edward Berger’s Conclave, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, organizes the search for the next pope. As various cardinals vie for power, gossip swirls and rumors spin, making this political thriller feel like an artistically beautiful game of Survivor. With a supporting cast full of A-listers, including Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, and industry icons like Isabella Rossellini, it’s clear how Conclave became an awards season superstar.
At the Golden Globes, Conclave took home Best Screenplay, boosting its odds for the coveted Best Picture award at the Oscars. The film ultimately received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (for Fiennes), Best Supporting Actress (for Rossellini), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Editing, and Best Production Design. The film is also nominated for Best Costume Design, a clear strength of the film, as audiences watch cardinals cloaked in crimson smoking cigarettes and typing away on their iPhones. What’s notably missing, however, is a nomination for Berger for Best Director.
For those with Catholic guilt, a hunger some drama, or an eye for incredible production design, Conclave is must-watch. Below, learn how to watch the film from the comfort of your bedroom.
